I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt, on the 20th instant of your letter of the 21st instant inclosing a copy of one which you had written to the Right Honble the Earl of Auckland G. C. B. under date the 16th of September last, regarding Menghing.
The island of
I abstain from offering any remark on that letter beyond the general one, that I can perceive nothing whatever in it possessing other than an interest or importance that could have called for, or authorized, communication to the Governor General of India, still less had it been your province to make such, that it is proper, that I should apprize you.
"That it is not only contrary to all established usage, but directly opposed to His Lordship's express wishes as intimated in a Despatch to the Majesty's late Plenipotentiary...
